A visit to the Skein Queen

Last week I was lucky enough to attend a talk by the Skein Queen - Debbie Orr which was arranged by Jelly.  It was so inspiring to find out how Debbie has built a successful business from what started as a curiosity about dyeing yarn.  She started her business in 2007, part-time using Etsy, but by 2009 it was a full-time job!

Debbie hand dyes yarn and many of her colourways are one off and unique. The colours are beautiful and rich and she is incredibly modest about her skill for producing such gorgeous yarns. Her business is still a relatively small operation - she manages the dyeing, customer service, admin and pattern design and has an assistant to help with the yarn-winding and labelling.

If you purchase yarns (as I did!) they are wrapped in co-ordinating tissue paper and sealed with her signature humming bird sticker. No detail missed.

Debbie's studio is based in Thatcham, Berkshire and is well worth a visit if you have the time. Do contact her before you turn up though as she often attends shows.

Debbie is an inspiration to those out there who have taken one career path but dream of taking a more creative one!
